As I understand it, Omeprazole is used to protect the stomach from the effects of another medication, in my case the painkiller Naproxen, which might attack the stomach lining.

I have stomach erosions brought about by long term prescribed pain killer use, without this drug which I take morning and evening I would be in great pain all the time from stomach ache and trapped wind. This enables me to take all the other medications I need every day and eat some foods which would otherwise be impossible to enjoy like cheese.

I used to get through a lot of Rennies after heart burn. Omeprazole has stopped that for me and I take them fairly regularly, depending on what i have eaten. Oddly eating pastry is setting off this more than it used to . Spicy foods still do.

As a patient on prednisolone, Omeprazole works very well in reducing the excess stomach acid.

Profile

Omeprazole is used to treat certain stomach and esophagus problems (such as acid reflux, ulcers). It works by decreasing the amount of acid your stomach makes. It relieves symptoms such as heartburn, difficulty swallowing, and persistent cough. This medication helps heal acid damage to the stomach and esophagus, helps prevent ulcers, and may help prevent cancer of the esophagus. Omeprazole belongs to a class of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs).
